Book title: Who Was Martin Luther King Jr?
Written by: Bonnie Bader
Illustrated by: Elizabeth Wolf

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Skipping two grades in school, he graduated from high school at age 15. He was married to a lady named Coretta Scott whom he met at the Boston University of Theology. Martin spoke for civil rights as a man. He led many marches and made many speeches including his famous “I have a dream” speech. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Even though he is dead, Martin’s dream lives on.

I think that it was fitting for Martin to do what he did. This is because he believed in peace and influenced many people with his speeches.

I really admire how Martin would always use peaceful means to communicate his message. He would never physically fight back if the response to his protests was negative.

Book Review by Vanessa, a Grade 4 Student

Good Pirate
French  Toast
         By: Kari-Lynn Winters
    Illustrated by: François Thisdale

A brief summary: In the book, Phoebe is on a walk with her grandma (who is blind). Some kids say as they pass by “Hey french toast”. Phoebe’s grandma asks why they call her that. Phoebe struggles to reply. Later on, Phoebe's grandma asks what colour her skin is. Phoebe says like maple syrup poured over french toast.

I like how the book talked about different skin tones but everyone should be treated the same. I did not like how some kids teased Phoebe about her skin.

I thought the book was a meaningful story that could teach people a lot about respect.

My Brother Martin
By: Christine King Farris
Illustrated By: Chris Soentpiet

At the beginning, Martin Luther King Jr.´s sister remembers when Martin was first born in the same room as his sister. Martin parents worked far away, so his grandparents had to take care of him and his sister. Once in a while Martin and his sister would hide in a bush in front of their house, and they would stick out a furry thing and it would scare their parents.

I like that the book tells how Martin´s family grew up, and how he lived. What I did not like is that Martin´s friends had to move away.

I think that when Martin´s friends moved away I would've said to the parents "Why does he have to move away? We were really good friends."
